Photos looking at photos? This could be the first commercial image

Photographic action was common in the 20th century but less than in the 19th century, when all the bad was a challenge.

One had to deal with tricky chemicals, heavy glass plates and large cameras so that each image could be carefully considered in advance - and no photographer would allow the camera to disturb his image significantly unless he wanted to be there.

Perhaps this image was produced as part of Gioacchino Altobelli's business venture. He and another photographer, Pompeo Molins, owned a station in Rome that specialized in photographs of famous sites (such as the Arch of Constantine) that they could sell to tourists as souvenirs.

Because this image is about the site and the photography process, we would be (and probably intended) as an integral part of the sales catalog - a way of declaring, "We are photographers and this is what we are photographing."

These and many other photographs are included in the book "Looking Again: Photography at the New Orleans Museum of Art," exploring the largest and most beautiful collection of photographs of the New Orleans Art Museum.
